Tip and Gratuity
Tipping is usually not included in the price. The waiters are paid only a minimum wage by the restaurant, the rest of their “salary” is paid by the guest in the form of the tip. They are expected to give at least 15% gratuity. In better restaurants and if the service was very good, you should give 20% – that’s where the real tipping starts. Always have the change given back to you, the tip stays on the table (this also gives you a little more time to figure it out). If you pay by credit card, add the amount to the bill in the appropriate column or leave the tip in cash on the table. If you are traveling in a larger group (more than 6 people), in some restaurants 20% is already obligatory, check the bill in such a case.
Cab drivers get about 15% but at least $1. Also the maid gets at least 1$ for each day and the porter gets 1$ per piece of luggage.
Valet Parking (parking service at restaurants or events) 2$ when they give you the car back.
Service establishments such as hairdressers, cosmetics, spa, massage and manicure, the tip is 15 – 20%, if the owner treats himself, you usually do not tip.
At gas stations, tipping is not expected even for service.
