Payment and Currencies
The import and export of foreign currency is not subject to any restrictions. If means of payment in excess of US$10,000.00 (cash, traveler’s checks, etc.) are carried when entering or leaving the U.S., they must be declared.
It is absolutely necessary to bring a valid international credit card (the most recognized are MASTER-Card or VISA-Card), because otherwise in hotels and when renting a car, high advance payments in cash are generally required, or a rental is not possible at all. You can pay with credit card in almost all hotels, stores and restaurants. Nevertheless, you should always have some cash for small expenses, groceries and tips. Some small pubs, stores or organizers do not accept credit cards. You can also withdraw cash (cash advance) with your credit card at all banks. However, sometimes relatively high fees are charged for this.
Recently, you can use some German credit cards to withdraw money from ATMs without fees. Please check with your bank before you leave. You should also inform your credit card provider about your stay abroad to prevent a blocking of your credit card due to unusual expenses. Traveler’s checks can be cashed at virtually all major stores, but they are used less and less.
Coins are also called “quarters” (25 cents), “dimes” (10 cents), “nickels” (5 cents) and “pennies” (1 cent).
