Our favorite is Publix, with a very large selection, good deli and fish departments, and its own bakery. Recently also a good selection of food from organic farming or organic animal husbandry (Green Wise products is a Publix-owned product line – e.g. excellent fresh eggs). Plastic bags are also going out of style. Many people use reusable shopping bags, which are now offered in almost all stores.
By the way, in Sarasota County you are not allowed to buy alcohol (which includes beer, of course) until after 12 noon on Sundays. This law is also strictly enforced. You can get beer, wine and champagne in the supermarkets. For higher-proof alcohol you have to go to a liquor store. Minimum age to buy alcohol or drink in public is 21.
